A subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Company, Mississippi Power operates as an investor-owned electric utility. Headquartered in Gulfport, MS, the energy supplier employs over 1,200 people and serves around 23 counties in southeast Mississippi. The utility company also provides wholesale energy power to six electric cooperatives financed through the Rural Electrification Administration. In 2010, the company established the Kemper Project with the goal of converting lignite coal to gas. The facility, located in Kemper County, MS, uses state-of-the-art electric power with a process called integrated gasification combined cycle to complete the conversion. In whole, 6,000 engineers and scientists contribute to the Kemper power plant. Mississippi Power also believes in supporting surrounding communities through educational programs. The New Teach Assistance Grant program provides $750 grants to help first-year teachers set up classrooms.
