In 1947, Norman A Running began Runnings as an automotive supply store. The retailer later expanded operations to sell farm and livestock supplies, hunting and fishing gear, sporting goods, housewares, tools and hardware, pet supplies, and apparel. Each Runnings store offers more than 70,000 items in stock. As of 2013, Runnings maintained a network of over 30 stores across Minnesota, Montana, and the Dakotas.
